AVIF encoding runs in your browser via a small WebAssembly encoder (~300KB) that's downloaded once and cached for offline use. Your file never uploads to a server.
PNG to AVIF online with ImgShifter
PNG to AVIF produces the most dramatic size reductions of any conversion on ImgShifter. PNG is lossless and verbose; AVIF is the most efficient mainstream format in existence and keeps the alpha channel. A 3 MB PNG screenshot routinely becomes a 150 KB AVIF, and a transparent logo shrinks by half or more compared even to WEBP - with the see-through background fully intact.
The encode happens on your device through a ~300 KB WebAssembly AVIF encoder, downloaded once and cached (the tool works offline from then on). AV1 compression takes real CPU effort, so allow a few seconds for large images - that computation is precisely where the byte savings come from.
The standard web-asset pattern: PNG stays your lossless editing master, AVIF becomes what you actually ship, and browsers from Chrome 85, Firefox 93, and Safari 16 onward render it natively. For destinations outside the browser - office docs, older editors, strict upload forms - fall back to the PNG.
